Openwave Systems Inc. Openwave is the world’s largest provider of mobile Internet software. Our open software suite, Openwave® Services OS™, enables telecommunications companies and wireless service providers to rapidly create and deploy new revenue-generating services while providing their subscribers with a richer, more personalized experience than ever before. Location products from Openwave include: Openwave® Location Manager, which is a location gateway that obtains a subscriber's location and presence data from multiple sources (including Cell-ID, A-GPS, AOA, E-OTD and others) and delivers that data to location-based applications. Openwave® Location StudioLocation Studio provides the secure connection between any number of third-party location-based applications and subscribers who request them. Location Studio ensures subscriber privacy, client authentication and supports flexible billing.


Business Motivation for ELBA

The objective of the ELBA project is to trial and validate location based advertising (LBA) for on a European scale. Openwave will focus on location middleware, software, technology, and expertise. The services are personalised for higher efficiency and service differentiation. Openwave is very interested to evaluate several service models. The extension of the product portfolio (e.g. Location Based Advertising and/or bundled offers) as well as the increase of the rate of penetration increase the economic viability of the sales-force. ELBA helps the preparation for the start of 3G (third generation of mobile communication) and is the basis of the con-version of existing online services into mobile services. Therefore cooperations with service providers as well as OEMs.

Openwave will contribute with location middleware, software, technology, and expertise.


Previous research experience (European, National)

Across all regions of the world - from Europe, Japan and Asia, to Latin America and North America - a fast-growing global community of developers is taking advantage of the open, standards-based Openwave® Services OS™ suite and Openwave® SDK to create next-generation mobile Internet applications and services. Developers include Web developers and integrated software vendors producing applications and content with high mobile value for consumers and corporate customers, corporate developers making road warriors more productive by extending corporate data to mobile phones, and consultants and systems integrators enabling their clients to leapfrog their competition by adding mobility to their applications. Openwave has also good experience in several research activities in the field of mobile internet.

Key personnel

Roger Granberg is the Regional Developer Marketing and Partner Manager at Openwave. Roger was the Product Manager for some of the first Location Based Services launched in Europe in 2000 together with Telia. Martin, Sindo, and Roger all come from the SignalSoft Corporation, which was acquired by Openwave in June 2002. SignalSoft Corp was the leading provider of location-based services software to mobile operators worldwide. SignalSoft was the first company in the world to with a location gateway in 1996 and launched as early as in 1997 a location based emergency service with At&T Wireless.
